I recently painted 100 extinct birds as part of a project that was called 100 Birds You Will Never See Again. The main purpose was to bring awareness to extinct birds as well as honor each one. These birds are truly lost gems. The reality is that you, your children, and future generations will never get to meet these lost birds.

No. 85 in the series.
The Hoopoe Starling
A handsome Hoopoe Starling. No hat on this fellow with these amazing head feathers. An 1807 account of the bird said they were abundant, with large flocks. Hoopoe Starlings were hunted by settlers on Réunion, who also kept them as cagebirds.
